Huacocholpa, Havecavelica Province Peru, Rhodochrosite
11 Rhodochrosite Huacocholpa, Havecavelica Province Peru
7.5x 4 X 1.3cm
Exceptional for the locality with a rich plate of bright pink Saddle-shaped crystals of wafer thickness intersecting. This more or less confirms the locality-specific swirl pattern as an exaggerated saddle-shaped morphology. Small xls of Pyrite and (rare) tetrahedrite decorate throughout and there is one eccentric white cleaved baryte xl which adds little. reverse shows smaller crystals of the same morphology merging pink with white color.

Moanda Mine, Haut-Ogooue Gabon, Rhodochrosite
16 Rhodochrosite Moanda Mine, Haut-Ogooue Gabon
3.7 X 3.2 X 1.4cm
A beautiful and wildly aberrant specimen from this well-known locality. Small veins of typical small scalenohedral crystals traverse a coal-black matrix displaying a vivid hot pink gemminess. This is most unlike nearly all other specimens from the area which dependably exhibit a dark red-brown color. In addition the upper margin shows a narrow row of nearly maroon crystals. There is some damage to the crystals in a belt across the middle of the piece which is likely extraction injury.
