Uchucchacua Mine, Oyon Province, Lima Department Peru, Rhodochrosite
17 Rhodochrosite Uchucchacua Mine, Oyon Province, Lima Department Peru
5.5 X 3.3 X 1.7 cm
Expertly trimmed rare example of rhombs from Uchucchacua. The matrix is indeterminant with a collar of quartz on massive gray rock. There is a secondary sprinkling of unknown black mineral sparsely on the rhodochrosite and referentially on the Quartz. Dealer reports that specimen is from the same mine as another example of distorted rhombs, that one on a definitive Uchucchacua matrix with tiny clear Fluorites. Raul Collado reports no current (2012) finds of rhombs.

Uchucchaqua Mine, Lima Department Peru ON APPROVAL, Rhodochrosite
19 Rhodochrosite Uchucchaqua Mine, Lima Department Peru ON APPROVAL
3.3 X 2.7 X 2.2cm
Unique oval sphere floater with no attachment consisting of a central black core (likely Sphalerite) hosting numerous nearly identical rhomboid to columnar xls with distinctly irregular stepped terminations. The color is a distinct mauve which is nearly unique for the locality (as are the rhombic xls.) The luster is vitreous to pearly, the latter suggesting Smithsonite as does the very heavy nature, but smithsonite not reported from Uchu. I am aware of only one similar specimen but that one has a small area of attachment.

Ural Mountains Russia, Rhodochrosite
20 Rhodochrosite Ural Mountains Russia
4.6 X 3.8 X 2.5cm
Very rare locality. No further information available. Presents as an irregular mounding with a stalactitic resemblance. Massive with a dark red color and distinctive "bubbly" surface texture. Both suggest origin as Kazakhstan. Urals approximate Kazakhstan on the western border but the Kazakhstan Rhodo locality is in the mid-eastern part. The specimen may be from Kazakhstan area of the former USSR which would possibly be labeled as "Urals"..
