The Kassandra mines began operations as early as the 6th century. Production declined during the Roman rule but picked back up in the 15th century. The open pit exploitation of iron bearing minerals began in 1901 , which is when the Madem-Lakkos Mine began operations. This micro-crystaline Calcite covering a knob of matrix and with a tint of sulfides is very lustrous and uncommon to the market.
